Everything About Hail Storms and Damage and Effects on Denver Roofing

May 31, 2017

When a hail storm hits, it can wreak havoc on Denver roofing, cars and anything else outside. Sometimes damage is minor but in other cases, the damage can be devastating. Since a hail storm can occur during severe weather season, it is best to know what to do in the event of an emergency. From the basics of hail and the types of damage, to using a roofer to repair the damage, learn what to do in the event of a hail storm in your neighborhood.

Basics of Hail

Hail are ice particles that fall from the sky during a thunderstorm. It can happen during warm days. So why does ice fall from the sky in a season that isn’t winter? Hail can occur when the air is not stable. As currents of air are constantly moving up and down quickly, water vapor is pushed up into a cloud that is below freezing. Therefore, rain is turned into ice. When the ice and the rain comes together, it creates hail. The longer it stays in a cloud due to the upward and downward drafts can affect its size. The size of hail depends on the upward speed of a draft. The faster the speed, the larger the hail size.

Types of Damage

Hail can be a devastating event that can ruin houses, roofs, cars and more. For roofs, hail can damage its structure. It can lead to broken or missing shingles, create holes, and more that lead to leaks. At this point, leaks can lead to water seeping into your home. From there it can lead to a new variety of issues. In addition, if there are sideways winds, it can break windows, dent siding, ruin doors and more. For cars, it can dent all surfaces and break windows. In addition, hail can also ruin landscaping.

Using a Roofer to Repair

Immediately after a thunderstorm with hail concludes and it is safe to go outside, you should inspect the outside of your home form damage. Be sure to take plenty of pictures for when you file an insurance claim. When inspecting, you may check your roof and it could appear to be in good condition but damage may have occurred that you cannot see. The best thing to do after a hail storm is to reach out to a local roofer. They can inspect the area and make sure your roof is in proper shape. This way, you will not need to worry about water leaks and other damage that can lead to issues down the road. To file a claim, you can review your insurance policy. Once you put in your claim, an adjuster will come out and inspect your roof. Your insurance company will come back with the amount they will provide for the claim and you can work with a local roofer to have your roof repaired.
